Phragmites Control Program

Phragmites Australis (Phragmites or Giant Reed) is a highly invasive, tall growing pest plant that spreads with voracity in and around both freshwater and salt marshes and watercourses throughout the state. It takes over everything, eliminating most beneficial plant species in its way.

In 1985 we began spraying portions of our holdings with Rodeo (Glyphosate), a product determined to be safe for usage in and around watercourses. Initially, the required chemical’s cost and helicopter spray-application was very costly and we were unable to do more than a few acres at a time.

Recently, the federal and state governments began a cost-sharing program which significantly reduced the expense of controlling the problem. Several thousand infested acres on our holdings are now under the spraying program representing nearly all of the problem areas.
