Canada Goose Refuge Project

The Taylor’s Bridge area in southeastern New Castle County once served as a major stopover for migrating flocks of Canada Geese in both the spring and fall migrations. Greatly increased hunting pressure and other factors over a period of years saw a steady drop in numbers of geese using the area.

In 1983, Delaware Wild Lands began an effort on our Liston Farm designed to once again draw significant numbers of Canadas back to the area and our Canada Goose Restoration Project was born. Two ponds and some 40 acres of pasture were created to surround the ponds and provide ample food for the birds to graze on. A well and pump system was installed to guarantee a water source during dry spells and to maintain water levels in both ponds. Some 50 young Canadas were placed there to attract their wild cousins. The Goose Project is now a 700-acre permanently protected refuge and the numbers are increasing at a healthy rate.
